M. Nicholas Mann’s thirty years experience as an organization development practitioner has included assignments as a coach, trainer, and consultant. His career includes serving as an infantry officer in the U.S. Army in the 1960s, and managing in a manpower and social services program in the 1970s. After 13 years as an independent consultant, Nick (along with several partners) started Resolution Dynamics, Inc. in 1988. He serves as managing principal of the firm, in addition to continuing his on-going consulting practice. Additionally, as an adjunct faculty member at the Federal Executive Institute in Charlottesville, Virginia, Nick facilitates learning teams in the one-month “Leadership for a Democratic Society” program and is on the FEI Executive Coaches roster. His current executive coaching clients are with the Federal Highway Administration and the Federal Communications Commission.

Nick’s M.A. is from The George Washington University’s School of Education in Human Resource Development with a concentration in guidance and counseling. His Ph.D., earned at Howard University, is in organizational communication. A certified executive coach from the Gestalt Institute of Cleveland, Some of Nick’s other executive coaching clients have included senior managers at the Smithsonian Institution; National Institutes of Health; US Nuclear Regulatory Commission; American Public Transportation Association; County Council of Montgomery County, Maryland; plus other government and non-profit organizations. He is a certified user of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and the Emotional Competence Inventory (ECI) – personality profiling instruments and also has taught management communication courses at Howard University’s School of Business.

As a coach, Nick works to establish a context that allows clients to rigorously think through their concerns. The coaching process commonly starts with enthusiasm, but may get harder as difficult revelations come up. In the best cases -- where clients are able to talk straight, persist, and learn – Nick has had his most rewarding coaching experiences. He uses target-setting, listening, questioning, feedback, requests, and stretching of strengths as primary ways of working with clients and, in a session with Nick, clients usually are guided through a structured conversation that includes:

  1. Assessment of what is.
  2. Choosing what to attend to.
  3. Attending to and exploring both the current & future pictures, plus choosing actions.
  4. Closing by assessing completed tasks, resolved issues, learning, shifts, etc.

Nick is married to Kathleen Comedy Mann, an educator in the D.C. Public Schools. They have three grown sons and three grandchildren. For rest, relaxation, and exercise, Nick is an avid DC hand dancer.
